The Promise
Nine Haiku for Advent
Naked we hide, as
sands smother the half-eaten
fruit. Felix culpa
*
A dream of Eden
haunts us, half-remembered joy.
We wait in exile
*
I search the skies. An
age-old darkness clouds my heart.
Look! A star, at last.
***
Snowflakes.
Light distilled.
Angels’ breath made matter by
the North Wind’s embrace.
*
Carols on short-wave
radio, voices glimmering
in rarefied air.
*
Star-patterned crystals
dance onto my outstretched palms,
messengers divine.
***
The sea in cupped hands.
The cosmos in a dewdrop.
God, of Woman born.
*
The night trembles with
pregnant stillness.
A quiver
before bow meets string.
*
A baby’s cry. A
promise kept. A wait fulfilled.
Dulce Jubilo.
