Good Boy
by Neil McRobert
Good Boy by Neil McRobert forms part of the Northern Weird Project, published by Wild Hunt Books – a series of six novellas of the supernatural and uncanny, set in the North of England, written by authors who are also based in the North.
The “good boy” of the title is Riot, a faithful dog belonging to the elderly Jim. The story of this inseparable duo is recounted by Jim himself to Margie, a widow, following their awkward encounter on the village green shortly after the mysterious disappearance of a young boy. Margie mirrors the reader’s doubts: is this a tall tale spun by a senile and possibly murderous old man with something to hide, or a genuine account of an ancient battle between good and evil?
This is a finely crafted novella with a
strong tinge of folk horror, at once creepy and unexpectedly uplifting.
